Streptococci are a group of bacteria whose various species cause a range of diseases and primarily colonize the mucous membranes. A streptococcal infection is usually not the first occurrence of the disease, as the bacteria can only spread throughout the body when the immune system is not strong enough to fight them off. Identification of the specific pathogen is determined by hemolysis—the breakdown of hemoglobin (the pigment in red blood cells). To assess the type of hemolysis, the doctor uses the CLEARTEST Strep A test strip to take a throat swab, which is then analyzed in a microbiology laboratory. The test results then indicate a possible infection based on the hemolysis.
